Alcatraz - Another one bites the dust..

This is a post specifically meant to make fun of shows that had potential and failed miserably. The moment that i give up a the show is when I stop the recording (while watching), delete it and then goto series recordings on my DVR and remove it completely.  This is what i call Stop-Delete-Cancel Recording.  These posts are an homage to the specific point that i gave up on the show.

This particular blog is all about the new show Alcatraz.

Alcatraz

I really tried hard to like this show and almost did.  That is, until,  all the bad writing and character development overshadowed my interest.  I think i made it to the 4th episode, the one with the landmines, when i gave up.

My moment of Stop - Delete - Cancel Recording (click here for prior posts) came when Sam O'Niel's character, Hauser,  gets a lead that the 102 yr old land mine killer is loose in a park plotting his next move.  Hauser shows up at the park in his loud gas guzzling super huge SUV; one that is so loud that it would scare the fish away in the nearby lake.  It just so happens that he pulls up at the exact time that the killer is standing behind a rock.  As he looks over, he sees the killer walking non-chalantly away behind the rock.  The killer didnt even notice him, but of course, Hauser did and the chase is on.  The killer would have certainly been on the lookout. The car approaching, as well as the car door shutting would have certainly sent this land mine killer dude running far far away; but he did not hear a thing!  This type of cliche scene has been done soooo many times.  Its an easy out for the writers to sum up their cat/mouse chase.  For me, this was my Stop-Delete-Cancel Recording.  There was just already too much wrong with the show that i had to give up forever on it.

Here are just some of the things that annoyed me:

I just want to punch him in his stupid looking face

Almost as much as this dick...

  • No character development. Right away we are forced to love this new, tough, blonde detective named Rebecca Madsen.  But why?  I feel no connection to her character yet the show is constantly forcing it in your face.
  • Jorge Garcia basically plays Hugo, but instead of being on a deserted tropical island in the middle of nowhere, he is on an island in the middle of California playing a character named Soto
  • Who carries an iPad with them in their inside jacket pocket?  Soto does that's who. I am not sure anyone else can fit an iPad in the inside of their jackets except him.

You can store ALOT of stuff in that jacket!
  • The lack of chemistry between Soto and Madsen is embarrassingly evident.  He seems to know everything there is about Alcatraz and then all of a sudden he is part of a secret FBI organization?  Come on.  Reminds me of Fringe with Peter and his father.  Another show that lacked chemistry in the very beginning. At least Fringe was entertaining enough to finally like and accept the lead characters.
  • There are major killing events going on all over San Francisco. Isn't the city a bit on-edge with all the new killings.  There was a sniper shooting at a fair.  Another at an amusement park.  Then there was a landmine incident at a park sending people's body parts all over San Fran.  Nobody is talking about this?  The media isn't asking questions of a serial killer or mass terrorism?  Did i miss something perhaps?
  • The only part of the show i found intriguing, which others would probably shake their head in disbelief, is the ongoing mystery as to why are these prisoners returning from nowhere and killing people.  This, to me, is intriguing.  However, i just cant sit through all the bs writing to get the answers i am looking for.  Booooo
  • Why, oh why, does EVERY cop show have to refer to people by their last names.  Does this really happen in reality?  I dont go around saying at my work "Hey Borja. Did you write that program yet". I hate that more than anything.
