American Idol Finals Week 1 - AND DIIIEEEEEE-EEEIIIIII WILL ALWAYSSSS LOVEEEEE YOUOUUOUOUO

Just as we suspected
Last nights American Idol was epic in terms of the singers that the finalists had to portray.  The men had to sing Stevie Wonder and the women, the late Whitney Houston.  It was comforting to hear Whitney's music as i havent heard it in a long time {sarcasm}.  Overall the finalists did a decent job with their song choices.

Some early observations:
Jimmy Iovine is the new Simon Cowell of the show. His brutal honesty is what makes this show still real in some ways.  Last week he got criticized by the judges, especially JLo, for being too harsh to the contestants.   Umm.. your job is to do just that and not tell the singers how pretty or handsome they look.  Anyways, Jimmy appears this week with Mary J (the queen of R&B?) and gives some lessons on how to sound bad ass for America.  I like this guy. I dont know why. I can say this, he knows what he is talking about as he is a HUGE producer and chairman of Interscope Records.  In fact, if you listen to some of Eminem's early CDs you will hear Eminem make references to Jimmy, as he is the one who supposedly sent Em's demo to Dr Dre to get signed.  Just a little fun fact there kids. (i totally googled it)

Now to the singing...

I would first like to apologize.  Our DVR was filled and we didnt realize this.  This means that the show did not tape on time.  I looked over at my cable box and saw that the red light was not on indicating that nothing was recording.  It was 8:07.  I freaked out and immediately turned on my tv, clicked DVR and saw that it was filled.  In a frantic rage, i deleted some shit that my wife taped (Ellen, Intervention, Firemen Do It Better, In One Hole Out the Other), turned on Channel 5 and quickly clicked Record.  Sheesh.. close call.. But wait.. Survivor also.. SHIT!!!   The night clearly didnt start out good for me.

Where was I.. oh yes.  So we missed the first singer Josh.  From what i heard he did a great job.  I will have to review the videos via YouTube before i can make my decision as to where to place him in my "list".

Elise sang Im Your Baby Tonight

  • Her voice definitely didnt fit the song.  Not a fan. Def not Whitney
  • very lounge singing style. I totally heard this at the Tropicana in AC one Saturday night walking to the casino

My grade - C.  It was just a-ight for me dog.

Ryan gives Elise some hair tips. Elise admits she never really heard of this song.  I almost spit out my apple with peanut butter (mmm). Isnt this bitch like 30!  How old am i??

"Gentle Giant" Jermaine sang Knocks Me Off My Feet

  • His height and beastliness knocks me off my feet
  • I never know how to grade this guy. His voice is soooo powerful but im not sure if i like it.
  • Jimmy LOVES this guy. I really think he has Jack and the Beanstalk fantasies about him
My grade - C

Next, Erika sang  I Believe in You and Me

  • Mary J  makes a note about Erika sounding like meat and potatoes.  You know what they say, you are what you eat.
  • Different key?.. a little lower
  • very good with high points
  • Song showed good range for her
  • very very good at the end

My grade B - BTW the term "goosies" is the new black.

Next, Colton sang Lately

  • Rocker style.. not that great in the beginning
  • Emo meets soul?
  • Ive said it before and i will say it another 6 times .. he sounds like Muse in some parts.. nice voice
My grade A - i like this kid

Next, Shannon sang  I Have Nothing
  • I wish i can say i have nothing to say to her singing but god dam i got alot
  • soo out of key and pitchy
  • she tried to mimic Whitney too much
  • major fail
  • Shannon went with the United Colors of Benneton this week
  • After the judges critiques, Shannon went on like this blonde from the Miss Universe:

My grade D - really bad.

Next, Deandre sang Master Blaster

  • He decided to go with a baseball style suit jacket. It was bad
  • Something about this guy gives me the heebie jeebies
  • Was this the Naema performance of this season.. you remember that one?  Where she got all jungle tribe dancing on us.
  • Reminds me of a Justin Guarini with a "relaxer" in his hair
  • oh the singing.. i have no clue.  I dont know how to judge this guy. I guess he did good.
  • He does this Adam Lambert scream in every song.  When he does it, he looks around at people instead of closing his eyes.  I dont know why but it creeps me the fuck out:

My grade NA - i have no clue

Next, Schyler sang Where Do Broken Hearts Go

  • Christ playing poker.. this country bitch can sing.
  • Dammmm that was good and i hate country
  • One thing.. I hate when singers do that thing where they start at one place, either sitting down or standing in place, and sing the verse.  Then, just before the chorus, they walk towards the audience or to the center of the stage.  VOMIT.. i hate that.

My grade - A

Next, Heejune sang All is Fair in Love

  • First we got Jerermy Lin and now this guy.  Dam ASIAN INVASION!!!
  • really really funny dude.  He should co-wrote my blogs
  • Mary J says "I wasnt expecting that from you". Why?  because he is Asian!?  Dam racist. The Asian community clearly needs an Al Sharpton to defend his "people" in situations like this
  • Love this guys voice.  Good control and great range

My grade - A

Next, Hollie sang All the Man That I Need

  • I will say this.. this bitch can sing. I wasnt expecting this from her.
  • Good high vocals. A little flat coming down but still good.
  • Steven says "youve been nailing it everytime" and nobody comments!!?

My grade - A

Next, Jeremy sang Ribbons in the Sky

Seriously Randy
  • This dude always looks scared and in need of a hug
  • Sounded nice but i dont think he shows a lot of range.
  • Great ending
  • Randy, the SwagMaster, tells him he needs to put more swag in his music. I couldnt agree more {pretending i know what Swag is}

My grade - B

Next, Whitney Houston.. i mean.. Jessica sang  I Will Always Love You

  • I must step away from my manliness for a second - wait, that doesnt make sense. I am blogging about American Idol for Christs Sakes. This is NOT manly - and state that i almost teared it was that good. Im embarrassed now and, also, when i said this to my wife last night.  Please dont judge. If you do, then please do it like the AI judges.. They are nice
  • It was so perfect.  Amazing
  • This is the girl to beat!
  • Steven, apparently being confused by the ratings, states "you just made 40 million people cry".  Who are these 40 million?  Isnt it only 20 million who watch?

My grade - A+

Next, Phillip sang Superstition

  • There you go.. his own rendition.. i like it
  • He sings scary.  Like, he gets lost in his music.  Reminds me of John Mayer making all weird faces when he sings.
  • i was totally filling it. I promise the Phil jokes will NOT stop.
  • very unique voice raspy voice

My grade - A
